Hedgehogs need room to roam to find food, friends and shelter.
By leaving a small gap in garden fences between neighbours - just 13 cm by 13 cm, you can help connect up sites for Hedgehogs while maintaining your privacy and security from people and other pets.
Join us in our social media campaign - using art to showcase the impacts of our 10 things (in this case barriers to habitat), on wildlife, especially hedgehogs - we are challenging everyone to take part.
Draw - Photograph - Sculpt - Mime - Dance etc. and post on all platforms. Please tag @HogFriendly @SHkingstonuni and as many different people as possible - ask them to make their own version and then keep spreading the word. Use #HHfacts #KUHoglets #hedgehoghelpers on your posts so that we can try to find them.
Lets try to take over social media with #HHfacts - Will you be lucky enough to spot us if you leave a hedgehog highway in your fence?Things that you can do to help with the habitat connectivity problem:
- Just in case you haven't heard of the hedgehog street campaign - this is the best way to help your little hoggy friends in urban areas at the local community level. They have multiple pages and resources on what you can do, but the main items are on these two pages:
- Talk to your neighbours: https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/help-hedgehogs/talk-to-your-neighbours/
- Link your gardens to create the habitat that they need: https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/help-hedgehogs/link-your-garden/
- Did you know that even fancy pre-made fencing can come hedgehog ready?
- A simple search on line can find you all sorts of ready made garden fencing like https://www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk/hedgehog-fencing
- And if you fancy a bit of DIY - https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-create-hedgehog-hole shows you just how to do it.
- And don't forget - post your art about connecting habitats for hedgehogs using the hashtag #10Things4HH
